Start of citizen participation with cities and municipalities
The organ and tissue donation flag was created in 2008. Featuring a green ribbon, the symbol of organ and tissue donation, the flag serves as a reminder that organ donation is first and foremost a gift of life. In April of the same year, the MRC de Pierre-De Saurel officially unfurled the organ and tissue donation flag in front of its offices in downtown Sorel. Then, for an entire week, the flag was displayed on the facades or inside several buildings, including in hospitals, teaching establishments, public organizations, and municipalities. The initiative also received considerable support from regional county municipalities (MRC)in the Montérégie region. At the initiative of Richard Tremblay, President of the Association canadienne du don d’organes, these same municipalities made a commitment to enter into a social contract with the Sûreté du Québec aimed at encouraging residents to provide their consent to organ and tissue donation. Over the years, more and more cities have joined this movement, and today some 100 cities and municipalities have thrown their support behind this initiative.
